Hall–Héroult process
The Hall–Héroult process was invented independently and almost simultaneously in 1886 by the American chemist Charles Martin Hall, [4] assisted by his sister Julia Brainerd Hall, [5] and by the Frenchman Paul Héroult. In 1888, Hall opened the first largescale aluminium production plant in Pittsburgh. It later became the Alcoa corporation.
Aluminium History, Sources, Properties, Forming and Products
Jul 28, 2006· The HallHéroult process was enhanced with the evolution of the Bayer process which produces aluminium oxide, from bauxite, which is used in the HallHéroult process. With commercial smelting now a reality and the price of aluminium dropping, aluminium products could become a reality. Sources of Aluminium Bauxite
HallHeroult cell Oxford Reference
An electrolytic cell used industrially for the extraction of aluminium from bauxite. The bauxite is first purified by dissolving it in sodium hydroxide and filtering off insoluble constituents. Aluminium hydroxide is then precipitated (by adding CO2) and this is decomposed by heating to obtain pure Al2O3. In the HallHeroult cell, the oxide is mixed with cryolite (to lower its melting point ...
The Age of Aluminum: ALCOA | Pennsylvania Center for the Book
Together, their method came to be known as the HallHéroult process, and more than 100 years later, it remains the only method of aluminum smelting used in the industry. A patent for the HallHéroult process was not officially issued until April 2, 1889, more than three years after its discovery.
Hall–Héroultmenetelmä – Wikipedia
Hall–Héroultmenetelmä on teollisuuden eniten käyttämä alumiinin valmistusmenetelmä. Alumiinioksidi (Al 2 O 3) pelkistetään 940–980 °C:n lämpötilassa alkuainealumiiniksi kryoliittiliuoksessa (Na 3 AlF 6), jossa on myös johdetaan sähkövirtaa siten, että hiilianodit reagoivat alumiinioksidin kanssa, jolloin syntyy sulaa alumiinia ja hiilidioksidia.

Significant innovation is needed to create a retrofit option for plants using the HallHeroult process that reduces cost and energy use, and improves Al production efficiency. TECHNICAL ...
Paul Louis Toussaint Héroult
Electrolytic aluminum was born. Without missing a beat, Héroult applied for a patent. This was the 23rd of April 1886 and Paul was 23 years old. The Héroult process is essentially identical to the one discovered by Hall in the same year. After prolonged patent litigation, an agreement was reached between the two inventors.

New technique could slash energy use in making silicon
Oct 13, 2017· The new process mimics in many respects an invention from 1886, the HallHéroult process, that revolutionized the transformation of aluminum oxide into elemental aluminum. HallHéroult changed aluminum from a precious metal into one widely used in vehicles, aircraft and structures.
